Using Social Media to Our Advantage

MassMutual is becoming increasingly more open to social media sites and realizing that they have a lot of expsosure to a broad range of potential customers.  Social media sites are a great way to ensure that people will see advertising and information about MassMutual, especially the younger generation who are always using social media sites.  Advertising on sites such as Facebook or YouTube will help to give MassMutual the competivie edge it needs in order to appeal to a younger generation.  In my white paper, you will find more information about how MassMutual is using social media, externally and internally, to better their business.

  1. I think one of the values that Social Media brings to the business world is fun and a human
element that seems to be lost in the corporate world today in traditional avenues for communication and marketing.

I like the fact that Mass Mutual has turned social media into an education source for customers on retirement service and make it fune as well by incorporating games into the mix.

  2. When some of my colleagues think about social media, they imagine coders working tirelessly to program websites like Facebook. It turns out that the most powerful part of these websites is the social aspect.

These applications are purpose-built to cater more towards the natural way that people communicate with each other. This leads to more "friendly" means of interaction, which is less likely to scare away some users.

  3. Advertising on social media webpages has been very successful for many companies. I have been seeing it more and more with large companies, posting paid advertisement on popular facebook pages. But What I found interesting is the small start up businesses going on some pages and commenting to a post with a one line advertisement.

  4. Nicely done white paper Kellie! I completely agree with the advantages that social media can provide MassMutual in reaching younger generations and conveying to them the importance of insurance and planning for retirement. Society is always changing, and the younger generations of the present are easiest to reach through social media, so over the coming years, I believe this initiative will pay dividends for MassMutual.

I was very interested in the way the company uses social media internally. The company network you described is a great way for employees to reach out to one another and to network. Is this network used for internal company communications or do those go through separate email accounts? Are there restrictions on the usage of the social network during work hours? Does the network also include Babson Capital and Cornerstone, or just MassMutual?

  5. David - MassMutual's employee network is through work email and can be accessed through our internal sites with no time limits. It is a professional site though so it is mainly for business/networking purposes. Babson and Cornerstone are included in the network as well.

  6. Kellie, your paper provides a solid rationale for why your company is choosing to use social media. The internal employee network is cool. What I see missing is any guidance to employees for their involvement on their own or the company's social media sites. Nice job researching the paper and using company press releases to get data. Watch your spelling above - "expsosure"
